New Therapist: Xander Hunt
New Therapist: Xander Hunt
Introduction
Hi! My name is Xander Hunt and I am the newest therapist at New Hope Counseling! I recently graduated with my master’s in social work from the Kent School of Social Work at the University of Louisville. Ever since I can remember I wanted to work in a field where I knew I’d be of service to other people. After enduring trauma and attending therapy myself, I knew this was the field for me. I truly love therapy for the unique bond that is formed throughout our work together.
Approach to Therapy / Modalities
Although I am fresh out of school, I bring a lot of strengths to the table. I believe my youth and recent education comes with new ideas when approaching mental health and therapy. I currently engage in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). I plan to receive EMDR training in September, while also looking into either Gottman or Internal Family Systems (IFS) training. ACT is my go to modality as I believe it leads to big changes in areas such as:
– Identifying and learning how to live through your values
– Creating distance from unhelp thoughts
– Living more presently
– Shifting gratification/happiness from outcomes to experiences
– Developing psychological flexibility
– Reduced experiential avoidance
ACT may be my favorite modality, but what I believe is the true “secret” ingredient of therapy is our connection. My main focus in therapy is to ensure that you feel seen, heard, and supported. Today’s world is filled with ‘blah’ and, with that, genuine connection has become rarer.
I take therapy serious in the moments when it naturally becomes that, but I also make sure to leave room for the enjoyment of life and good vibes.
Target Population
As I’m a fairly new therapist, I am open to any and all clients whether that be teens, younger or older adults, and couples. However, the group of people I specialize in is men (both teens and adults). In today’s world there are much less male therapists out there and I believe this is leading to a decrease in open emotional conversations among men.
This is not any one man’s fault; however, I believe the world will become a better place with men speaking about and understanding their emotions more. There is an innate connection between men, as there is with women, that I believe proves useful in the therapeutic process. This concept in no way is saying that a male provider and female client, and vice versa, cannot have a wonderful relationship. This aspect of therapy comes down to a case by case scenario.
When I first entered therapy, I was lucky to receive a male therapist. This relationship was very healing for me as it was the first male figure in my life with whom I could openly discuss my emotions with. This insight has led me and my career to where I am today!
What to Expect in Your First Session with Me
The first session will be slightly longer than the rest of our work together as it helps me to get some general information on who you are and what your life has been like up until this point. However, it will not be me sitting in front of a laptop typing everything you say. I will be present in the conversation with you, taking notes about important things and topics.
Throughout this session we will discuss many things, but mostly about what brings you into therapy. Through this we will explore other areas of your life and get to know you a little better! I like to think I’m a positive, easy conversating person to share a room with. Whether you’re having the best or the worst day, I’m honored to share that space with you!
